2021 Design Trends

No matter if you are a real estate agent, home stager, or flipper, here are the design trends you will want to be aware of in 2021. We are paying attention to a few shifts in desires that the pandemic has largely been responsible for! Looking ahead to 2021, we plan and preparing to meet the look that buyers want to see.

  1. Cozy Interiors, Warm Woods, Natural Textures

We have been seeing this trend for awhile now, but looking ahead to 2021, the desire for natural spaces is only going to increase.

You can expect to see an earthier look, and this is going to come to play through natural materials like ceramic, leather, plants, cotton, wool, cane, jute, and other organic fibers. These elements replicate the feel of being in nature, being relaxed, and being intentional, and we are about to see even more of that this year. In terms of color we will see warmer colors play a vital role. Sherwin Williams color of the year 2021 was thus Urbane Bronze which they say they picked because its “warmth and comfort breathe down-to-earth tranquility.”

The ways we implement this: Organic, textured, bohemian chic pieces; bring came into stages in 2020 and will continue into 2021. Warm colors such as ochre, warm neutrals, will layer to bring the warmth in design.

2. Classic Design is Being Revitalized

Traditional spaces used to bring to mind over done and stuffy furniture- but no more. Think Pottery Barn inspired, utilizing those natural and light wood, rounded edges, overstuffed furniture and exchanging modern hard lines for softer curves. People are wanting to see spaces designed beautifully, but showcasing more comfort, rather than formality.

The ways we implement this: While we don’t see the desire for minimalist or mid-century modern interiors disappearing anytime soon, in our projects we are playing with the juxtaposition of modern and traditional elements to our stages through upholstered dining chairs and armchairs.

3. Outdoor Kitchen and Living Spaces

People are bringing the outdoor dining atmosphere to their own homes. With the whiplash of restaurants opening and closing, families are wanting outdoor kitchens and dining spaces where they can safely host people, but still have all of the kitchen and lounging accoutrements they need. Whether that is showcasing outdoor tables, lounge chairs, barbecues, or full on built in kitchens. that is a home perk that many will be looking for in 2021.

The ways we implement this: We are paying special attention to outdoor living spaces in our home stages. This means bringing in rugs, lounge chairs, coffee tables, side tables, outdoor dining tables and chairs; all to showcase one of the most coveted home amenities of 2020 and beyond- outdoor living.

4. Defined spaces and functionality

We have said this before and we will say it again- but the open concept living room has reached its limits. While people aren’t going to start adding walls to their open concept living rooms, we do expect to see those open floor plans having more defined spaces contained within them. We have already started implementing this design desire in our 2020 stages, creating cozy office spaces in nooks where someone can still be with their family, but sneak away for a little productivity. We see this continuing in 2021, reading nooks, office spaces, workout rooms, and a “space within a space.”

The ways we implement this: In every home we stage, we make sure to utilize and revitalize dead walls to make functional spaces in open floor plans, and include study spaces when a listing has extra rooms.

5. Have you Heard About “Grandmillenial”?

With all thats happened in 2020, its no wonder people are looking for the traditional comfort of simpler times. Grandmillenial style “combines modern design with the decor you might expect to see in your grandparents' home”. In other words, “Granny-Chic”

Expect to see crochet, needlework, floral patterns, vintage glass, wicker, and maybe even the occasional ruffle.
