What Is Hygge? How To Create Hygge In Your Home

The world of Interior design is a mix of everlasting classic styles and trends which come and go. Floating among them are words which create a buzz from time to time. One of them is Hygge.

What is Hygge?

First, lets discuss how we pronounce Hygge! Pronounced ‘hoo-ga’ or ‘hue-gah’. The use of Hygge has amplified since 2010.

Hygge is more of a feeling or mood rather than a specific style. The concept can even be interpreted as a mental state rather, than a physical one. But in this time of uncertainty, the desire to create Hygge in our own homes has only increased. Born of Danish or Norwegian origin Hygge means the “quality of coziness”. So how do we create this in our own spaces?

6 ways to create Hygge in your home:

1.    Grab your favorite mug, a throw blanket, and curl up

Hygge is moreso a feeling than a strict design, so think of all the things that give you that feeling of coziness. Choose your favorite coffee mug, set up a cozy chair with a chunky knit throw blanket. Surround your space with pillows, textures, and make sure your lighting is well placed to emit that feeling you are trying to creare. Harsh, fluorescent lighting will be more reminiscent of a sterile environment, rather than a cozy one.

2.    Design your own creative space, or a reading nook

Find spots or places in your home which can be an ideal reading nook for you to relax. Line up all the favorite books, put up an inspiring poster or art piece and lay out some cushions.

Maybe under a stairway, a place near a fireplace or another interesting space to get creative about. Take a spot or a nook in your home and warm it up as a diy project.

3.    Choose your Hygge color palette

The trending hygge color palette is neutral and warm. Ivories, off whites, light grays blended with a pop of warm yellow, ochre if you like. Those are the colors which evoke warmth and comfort while creating hygge in a home.

4.    Candles, light and more

Candles and aroma add hygge to your home. Bring in candles where you see fit – think fireplace mantels, dining tables, counters. Think areas and spaces getting the sun in, warmth and glow of natural light. A room or home with natural light helps create the feeling.

 5.    Add Textures

Layering textures, such as threadwork pillows, warm rugs, throws all add to layering and creating richness in the space inspired by hygge.

6.    Bring in nature

Bringing in some of the green with potted plants, succulents and indoor plants will help create green and anything that feel close to nature whenever you view it or cross it creates that beautiful feeling you are aiming for.

Hygge is not about being elaborate but with basic simplicity and the simple pleasures of life we can create the warm, fuzzy feeling we are all looking for. With the air of uncertainty and fear which the Corona Virus pandemic has created in this world it’s the perfect feeling you want to create in your home space!
